Dr. Powell approaches orthopaedics as he does life, with a positive attitude but with a servant's heart. He holds patient care to the highest of standards and believes in providing excellent service and treatment to all patients. "Patients seek solutions to their problems and my mission is to assist them in that task. I believe that problem solving begins with understanding the problem and in medicine, that begins with listening to the patient. I am committed to working with you, to treat you and your family with the same degree of care and compassion that would be expected if I were the patient."

Dr. Powell has extensive experience in arthroscopic treatment of injuries. He has a special interest in this area as well as in trauma, adult reconstruction, and in the care of athletes.

A native of Mobile, Alabama, Dr. Powell was graduated from Millsaps College in 1986 with a B.S. in biology and chemistry. While at Millsaps, he lettered four years in football, was named to the 1st Team, Kodak All-America Football Team and sang in, and was a soloist with the select chorus.

In 1987 he began medical school at UAB where he served as president of his junior and senior classes, was president of the medical student senate and was inducted into the AOA honor society. In 1991 he was graduated from UAB and in that same year married the former Dr. Rhonda Henderson before entering his residency program at the University Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, completing it in 1996.

Dr. Powell enjoys outdoor activities, water sports, coaching youth sports and being involved in his church. The Powells have a son Matthew and a daughter Caroline.

Dr. Powell currently serves as Chief of Staff at Brookwood Medical Center.
